At Jukkasjärvi Vildmarksturer, safety and care are key values in our work with dog sledding. We have a fundamental philosophy that safety must never be compromised and this attitude permeates everything from daily routines to staff training and animal handling.
Before a dog sledding trip starts, careful preparations are made. The dogs are fed and prepared by the experienced staff, who also make sure that everyone is ready for the tour. Our guests participate in a briefing where they learn the basics of handling the dogs with care and respect. During the tour, guests care for their assigned dogs under the supervision of guides, which not only strengthens their relationship with the animals but also contributes to a more engaging and genuine experience.
The safety of guests is one of the highest priorities during every dog sledding tour. Our guides, who have extensive experience and training, are responsible for maintaining safety throughout the trip. They carry safety equipment such as first aid kits and equipment to deal with any problems with sledges or other gear. For longer journeys, satellite phones are used to contact support if necessary. Dog sled routes are carefully planned taking into account weather and ice conditions to minimize risks.
The well-being of dogs is at the heart of our entire operation. Each dog is monitored daily through a database that records their work, rest and health. This allows us to adapt the workload to each dog's needs and ensure they get sufficient rest. During the tours, the dogs are given regular breaks and energy replenishment in the form of fish snacks. At the end of the tour, the dogs return to their kennels, where they rest and recover with a carefully balanced diet.
We have an experienced team with a total of 196 years of combined experience among our 22 employees. The average working life is nine years per employee and the most experienced guide has completed over 260 weekly tours in the mountain environment. This high level of experience is combined with annual training in areas such as CPR, winter conditions and ice knowledge. Our strong focus on staff training and safety helps to create a high quality and safe experience for all our participants.
